Elementary / Middle School Tournament

This is an exciting athletic event that the South Vancouver Island Basketball Association and the Westshore Basketball Association are again combining their efforts to offer to you and your student-athletes as a highlight during your next elementary school and middle school basketball seasons.

After navigating our way through the negative impact of the pandemic to run this event last year, we are again offering the annual Victoria Future Stars Basketball Tournament for all Victoria-area Night League, elementary-school and middle-school boys and girls basketball teams scheduled for Friday-Saturday, November 22 – 23.  There will be separate divisions for grade 5, grades 6-7 and grade 8 boys and girls teams.  All the tournament games will be held at the new Belmont Secondary School Gym where we have three courts which can be used for this event.  This event will be a great way for your school teams to end their season and for Night League teams to finish the first half of their season!

Every team playing in this year’s tournament will receive the following:

  • be able to play a minimum THREE games at the new Belmont gym facility
  • individual medals and team trophies for top two finishing teams in each division
  • the opportunity for special draws and prizes during the event

48 Teams!

With the facilities and the people available to run this event on these dates, we can include up to 48 teams (six divisions each with eight teams) in this year’s tournament.  We are happy to include multiple teams in the same division from one school or program, with space permitting in each division.  Last year we had 48 teams participate in this tournament along with a lengthy waiting list and we expect greater interest from teams wanting to participate this year.

Payment Details

The registration fee per team is $125 (cheques made payable to South Vancouver Island Basketball Association or etransfer to [email protected]) with all proceeds going toward providing spring and summer basketball opportunities for local players.  Only submission of your registration form and entry fee will confirm participation of your team in this year’s tournament so make sure you submit your registration material ASAP!!  In keeping with our insurance requirements, we must also now have all players complete a waiver form which will be sent out after teams register for the tournament.

This deadline

The final deadline to register teams in this year’s tournament is NOVEMBER 1, 2024, but divisions may be filled prior to this deadline due to space limitations.  Please complete the attached team registration form and return it with your entry fee cheque (you can also etransfer your entry fee) ASAP to the following:

Tournament Guidelines and Playing Rules

All scorekeepers and referees will come from the Belmont girls basketball team players and coaches along with community volunteers.

Due to the gym time and worker availability limits we have, it is important all games start on time as scheduled.

We have tried to address potential conflicts as much as possible, but we will never be able to work around all soccer, Night League or other conflicts – we cannot make everybody happy!!  The schedule as it presently is structured will stay in place and will not be changed so do not ask for any changes now!!  We have 44 teams playing 77 games using all our available gym time so changes are not possible.

All teams are guaranteed to play THREE games; medals will be presented to the first and second-place finishing teams in each of the six divisions.  In some divisions, once teams lose, they will play scheduled exhibition games to give them their three-game guarantee.  We will only be worried about placings for the top two teams in each division.

Tournament t-shirts and hoodies can be ordered and picked up during the tournament.

Coaches must submit a roster with their team name and player uniform numbers before each game; the player names are NOT necessary as we will not record them on the scoresheet

-all games will be running time with NO timeouts allowed; the clock starts when the games are supposed to start by the schedule so do not delay!!

Players can play for two teams if one is their school team and one is their Night League team; players CANNOT otherwise move between teams and play for multiple teams in the same club program during the tournament

All two-shot free throw fouls will be shot with one shot for two points

SIX fouls for players to be disqualified, bonus foul shots occur on the 10th team foul

Teams in the grade 5 divisions MAY NOT press in the fullcourt; teams in the grades 6-7 and grade 8 divisions may press in the frontcourt until ahead 15+ points after which point the pressing team must move back to their backcourt before defending the ball; zone defence CANNOT be played in ANY division

All divisions will be played with five players on the court for each team

Teams MUST bring their own basketballs for warmup; one team should provide a game ball to be used during the game, the tournament hosts will NOT provide any balls for use

After each game, teams must leave their bench quickly to allow the next teams to arrive

Ties at the end of regulation will cause overtime with the FIRST POINT SCORED OF ANY TYPE determining the winning team

Game timing will be as follows for both days:

-35-minute time slots – teams MUST be ready to play at the scheduled starting time!!

-1 x 25-minute running-time games

-3-minute halftime

-4-minute warmup

Tie-breaking processes to be used at end of pool play:

two-team tie – result of the game between the tied teams (NOTHING else considered!); if the teams did not play, the plus-minus rules detailed below will come into effect

three -team tie – count +/- point totals in games between the tied teams, teams can count a maximum of +15 from any one game; if at the end of this first step two teams remain tied, the result of the game between those two teams will break the tie with the winning team winning the tiebreaker

-if at the end of this first step all three teams remain tied, the coaches will each flip a coin until there is one coin different from the other two and this different resulting coin will win the tiebreaker; the remaining two tied teams will be determined based upon the result of the game between those teams

The Tournament Directors will be in the gym during the entire event; please direct any questions or concerns to them; the Tournament Directors will rule over any disputes which may develop during the event.  The decision of the Tournament Directors is FINAL !!
